South Dakota Attractions
There are many activities and attractions in South Dakota. From National Parks to Scenic Byways, you'll find plenty to do in South Dakota. Here are a few of our favorites.
Visit Badlands National Park. Water and wind sculpt the solid into buttes, spires and pinnacles that make Badlands National Park famous. Outdoor recreation in the park is wide ranging: biking, hiking and camping being the most popular. There are seven short trails in the park which highlight the history of the geography. During your visit to Badlands you'll find 2,000 pound bison grazing on grass. If you are lucky you'll see one of the few black footed ferrets that live in the park.
Tour Wind Cave National Park. With rolling prairie, pine forests and intriguing rock formation, Wind Cave National Park is a great place to visit in South Dakota. Activities include spelunking in the 70 mile labyrinth of passageways in Wind Cave, viewing bison, cycling along prairie roads and hiking along some of the 30 miles of trails. Bring a tent and camp in Wind Cave National Park.
Experience Black Hills National Forest. Rising several thousand feet above the surrounding prairies, the Black Hills are an outdoor enthusiasts dream. The Black Hills are an area of 125 miles long by 69 miles wide located in western South Dakota and easter Wyoming. Drive through the Black Hills on a day tour, hiking along the many trails, road or mountain bike, or just relax with a picnic lunch.
Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a must see in South Dakota. As the gateway to the West, the memorial represents the foundation, preservation and expansion of the United States. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum and his team spent 14 years carving the faces of four presidents in the granite. The presidents include George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.
Visit Crazy Horse Memorial. Chief Henry Standing Bear wrote sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski in 1939 and requested him to carve a mountain sculpture to honor American Indians. The result is the world's largest mountain sculpture, Crazy Horse Memorial. A work in the making, it will be 641 feet long and 563 feet high when it is complete.
Drive the Native American Scenic Byway. This road travels through the heart of South Dakota's prairies. There is a good chance you;ll see prairie dogs, deer and pronghorn as your drive this scenic byway. You'll travel through the lands of Crow Creek, Yankton, Lower Brule, Cheyenne River and Standing Rock Sioux Tribes.
Come summer drive Spearfish Canyon State and National Forest Service Scenic Byway. It is a twenty mile route that goes through Spearfish Canyon. You'll find spectacular scenery including Bridal Veil and Roughlock Falls.
