South Dakota Hunting

Hunting in South Dakota is more than just a hobby...it's a passion. South Dakota is known for its world-class hunting on nearly 5 million acres of public land. Hunters from all over the country come to our fields in search of ring-necked pheasants, waterfowl and many other small game species. Pheasant season is always one of the biggest events of the year with thousands of hunters and millions of birds.

Pheasant hunting and other upland game, waterfowl hunting, small game and deer hunting season all open in the fall. During the winter months, late season deer and predator hunting are active. In the spring, hunters can participate in turkey and light goose season. In the off-season, prairie dog hunting and other varmint hunting are permitted on private land (with permission).
